Visiting Malibu And Its Many Beaches

Malibu isn’t just a beach; it’s practically a whole coastline. Stretching for roughly 27 miles, Malibu comprises about a dozen beaches from Decker Rd. (Hwy. 23) in the west, to Topanga Canyon Blvd. in the east. At this part of the California coast, the beaches face mostly rather than west, except for Westward Beach near Pt. Dume.

The Malibu beaches lie along the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, which are so often subjected to the vicious circle of fires, floods and mudslides. The Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, is squeezed between the beach and the cliffs much of the way. The ocean side is lined with highway hugging houses of the mostly rich and/or famous.

The beaches themselves range from wide and sandy to so narrow that the waterline comes up directly under someone’s deck. Rocky coves and tide pools are also plentiful.

Malibu itself does not have a cohesive downtown section. Restaurants are spread out, as are a few shopping centers sprinkled with chain stores mixed with specialty shops. Residential sections vary from small, crowded beachfront houses to mountaintop mansions.

GETTING TO MALIBU BEACH CALIFORNIA

You can take the I-10 west through Santa Monica, then veer north onto PCH (Hwy 1) as it hits the coast. Keep driving, and you’ll soon be in Malibu.

Alternatively, from Highway 101 in the San Fernando Valley, you can take a 15-20 minute winding drive through the Santa Monica Mountains along Topanga Canyon Blvd., Malibu Canyon Rd. (Los Virgenes exit), Kanan Dume Rd., or Decker Road. All of these drop down into some part of the Malibu coast, with Malibu Canyon Road taking you the closest to the pier, lagoon, Surfrider Beach and shopping areas.

THE MALIBU BEACHES

Starting at the Ventura County line and heading east towards Santa Monica, there’s Leo Carrillo State Beach, which has camping, tide pools, trails and interesting rock formations. Then comes Nicholas Canyon County Beach, where you park on the bluff and hike down to surf or dive.

The next three beaches are scenic coves with more unusual rock formations. El Pescador State Beach at the end of Decker Rd. has a narrow sandy beach and picnic tables on the bluff above. La Piedra State Beach is similar, only further east.

El Matador State Beach is larger, with a larger pay parking lot and a trail and stairway down to the beach. It also has stunning sea stacks, which attract cormorants and other sea birds.

Broad Beach Road goes through a residential neighborhood between Pacific Coast Highway and the beach. there are a couple of beach access points that go between the houses. You can enjoy the beach at the end of the path or steps, but be careful not to trespass onto private property.

In marked contrast, Zuma Beach County Park is a wide sandy beach with lots of facilities, including restrooms, showers, dressing rooms, snack stands, volleyball, swings and a large pay parking lot.

Point Dume State Beach is next to the Point Dume Headlands, which has some trails. The beach has tide pools and sandstone cliffs. Westward Beach is the section towards the Point, which faces west.

Paradise Cove is a small but lovely beach with expensive parking. No surfing is allowed. Escondido Beach can be found near Malibu Cove Colony Drive. The access point is next to a blue and white trash can. This is a diving spot. Corral State Beach/Solstice Beach is a narrow sandy beach with street parking.

Where Malibu Road veers off PCH through another neighborhood, there are several public stairways next to telltale blue and white trash can.s These paths or stairways go between private homes, so take care not to disturb the residents or trespass. Once on the beach, you must stay a certain distance away from the rear of the houses; below the high tide line should be safe enough.

The following equipment list will be especially helpful if you’re operating on a shoestring budget. It will also be useful if you are uncertain about operating this type of business and want to test the waters.

Ovens – The health department has no requirements concerning the size, type, or make of oven used in your business. You can use the same type of conventional stove that you have in your personal kitchen if it bakes properly and produces the results you need. But you should be aware that conventional ovens limit the quantity you can bake at one time and the speed of baking.

To increase production and keep up with demand, you’ll need a commercial oven, preferably convection. Convection ovens bake fast and efficiently. Metal Detector Review – Garrett GTP 1350

The Garrett Metal Detector Company is a family-owned and family-run business. Charles and Eleanor Garrett opened for business in 1964 with the motto: “To develop and manufacture the best possible multi-purpose metal detectors based on the most advanced technology possible”.

I purchased my first Garrett detector in 1971, a multi-coil Coin Hunter, and have owned many other units without ever having to send one to the factory for repairs. In recent years I have owned about ten GTA’s and GTI’s and found them all to be excellent deep-seeking instruments for both coin and relic hunting. Today’s review is the result of my desire to see how the GTP 1350 performs as it appears to take the best features of the GTA and GTI series. The Garrett engineers sought to produce a detector with features not found on any other brands and yet making it simple to operate. One of the biggest frustrations users have with all the new technology is that the learning curve is overwhelming and as a result many will give up on the hobby. While the 1350 is sophisticated, it does not take a great deal of time to master its functions and meet with success in finding treasure.

The GTP 1350 looks like its counterparts in the GTA And GTI Series, as the control housing is basically the same. Garrett has fine-tuned this housing and shaft over a period of years and it is proven to be ergonomically designed for all size users. The feature that sets this detector apart from all others is the unique target sizing feature. The GTI’s introduced us to target imaging. Not only did the detector give target ID and depth it also gave an image of the target so user would know whether the item was worth digging. I found this to be great at the beach as well as on the farm or pasture when relic hunting. Items like soda decorative trash cans and horse shoes will sometimes give a positive coin indication at deeper levels. However, the imaging feature would show that the item was larger than a coin, so bypass and go on to next target. The GTI 1500 and 2500 both were great to use for coin and relic hunting and stopped me from digging shoes and decorative trash cans at more than a foot deep. The 1350 handles the imaging in a different manner. The Profiling mode, which can be turned on or off, gives three target sizes on the LCD screen. Coin-sized objects register as small, targets up to 4 inches in diameter register as medium, and bigger targets will register as large. The targets are sweep-distance dependent but not effected by sweep speed. After a short time of using the 1350 in the profiling mode I was hooked on it.

Unique to the GTP 1350 is that it provides target sizing or profiling with any search coil

unlike the GTI series which requires special Imaging coils to provide that information. This will save money when purchasing additional coils as it allows any GTA coil such as the Crossfire II or DD coils to be used in the profiling mode. I love it because I have ten GTA’s and GTI’s and own every coil out there and the GTP 1350 becomes the most versatile deep-seeking detector I own.

All adjustments on the GTP 1350 can be made easily through the Menu option and touchpads on the face plate of the control housing. The 1350 has five independent discrimination search modes: Coins, Jewelry, Relics, Zero and Custom. The first four are preset at the factory but all five are adjustable. This permits the users to fine tune or tweak the system to their specific needs without any complicated programming.

The discrimination circuitry allows users to accept or reject specific targets without any loss of sensitivity as typically occurs on most other non-notch detectors. This also aids in minimizing the amount of trash recovered from a trashy site. Selecting what targets to accept or reject is extremely easy and is one of the most highly-rated features of the Garrett GTA & GTI Series and is now found on the GTP 1350. The GTP 1350 is powered by eight AA batteries which will provide about 25 hours of use. Nicad batteries can be used with no loss of performance. A nice feature incorporated on the GTP is the removable battery pack initially introduced on the GTA line. If weight is a factor, simply slide the pack off the armrest and clip it to your belt to drop the weight of the detector to just over 2.5 pounds!

The GTP performed flawlessly in my test gardens and was fun to use at the beach too. It found and accurately identified all of my six and eight inch targets in both the coin and trash gardens. I recovered many coins as deep as 10 inches at my favorite park beach in Tarpon Springs, FL. The 10 X 14 DD coil that belongs with my GTI 1500 also handled the worst mineralized ground I know of in Tampa Bay and produced nine Wheaties, 2 Indians and a 1917 Canadian quarter. I recommend this detector to serious coin and relic hunters who want high performance and features not found on other detectors in its price range. Recently, the price has dropped to about $550.00 for a new machine with the Garrett 2 year warranty. I purchased mine on ebay for $340.00 in nearly new condition. I am not concerned about warranty as I have never had to have a Garrett repaired in more than 35 years of using them. Here’s to “diggin it”! Larry

What You Never Knew You Wanted To Know About Muscles

Our whole system is inter-dependent. When one system is weak, the others are affected. You wear a pair of broken down shoes, or too high of heels, your back hurts. You use your arms painting high cupboards or hanging curtains all day, your neck hurts. Hamstrings that are too tight invariably lead to back problems, even neck problems – and poor posture can make your feet hurt. It’s all connected.

The fact is, the muscles and tendons in your lower legs and bottom of your feet are ultimately connected to the small muscles in the neck and at the base of the skull. Next time you lay on your back to stretch your hamstrings and flex your foot, feel your head pull back. If you tuck your chin, you’ll get a better stretch in the back of the leg. It’s all connected.

Now, I happen to believe that the best way to take care of your self is to treat the body as a whole, not just some of the parts. I also believe the most effective way to do this is to learn how the “whole-body” works together to support itself.

It’s like all the years the “mind-body” connection was scoffed at as a new age fad. Don’t those folks feel foolish now? The body can’t do anything without the head- brain, or at least the Central Nervous System… except maintain a heartbeat. Isn’t that trippy? The reason?…the heart has a brain of its own, but you’ll need to keep your eyes out for another article to learn about that!

Every muscle in the body moves something… that’s what muscle does, as it contracts, it pulls. There are three types of muscle tissue: Smooth muscle, which is involved in movement inside the body, like in the intestines, the bladder, the uterus, etc.; Cardiac muscle contains an electrical circuitry of it’s own which runs the pumping of blood into and out of the heart, creating our heartbeat; and skeletal muscle which is the way we pull bones together to produce external movement.

Both smooth muscle and cardiac muscle are “involuntary”. That simply means we don’t have to think about moving the food we eat along our digestive tract, nor do we have to remember to tell our heart to keep the blood moving.

On the other hand, skeletal muscle takes some thought… unless it is an involuntary action caused by a reflex in response to a given stimulus, i.e., when something flies near your face, you don’t stomp your foot, you wave your hand by your face to shoo the object away.

Otherwise, external movement takes at least an initial conscious thought…”I think I’ll go get something to eat.” So you get up out of your chair and either walk to the fridge and grab a piece of fruit or stuff to make a sandwich – or – to jump in your car and drive to the nearest fast food place. Hopefully you do the first, but either way you made a conscious decision to move your body. Now luckily for us, we don’t have to think about the mechanics of putting one foot in front of the other or opening the refrigerator door, we learned that in toddler 101. But the sequence of movements were orchestrated by a series of nerve signals sent from the brain, through the spinal cord nerves to the muscles involved in the motor activity; that is a convincing argument that we need to think about our body/brain as a whole.

Okay, back to the muscles, because if you are now convinced that it’s better to keep moving than not, you want to learn how to make exercise both safe and effective, as well as fun. In order to do that you need to learn how that happens. Basically what skeletal muscles do is to pull bones together or apart. It is the result of muscles in the front of the upper arm that bend the elbow (pulling the bone in the lower arm closer to the bone in the upper arm), and the muscles at the back that straighten the elbow. Picture this: The bicep muscle group brings your sandwich to your face; the triceps muscles take it away. Not too complicated. During movement, muscles perform one of three tasks. The muscle that actually produces the movement is called an “agonist” or prime mover. The opposing muscle is called the “antagonist”, because its job is to control the speed and force of the prime mover. The third task is helping with the movement. These muscles are called “synergists”.

Obviously, eating a sandwich takes the cooperation and coordination of many, many muscles; the hand, wrist, upper and lower arm (both front and back) along with muscles in the face head and neck. It also involves muscles in the chest, side of the ribcage and the back. (Don’t forget cooperation of your good judgment and will-power also!).

Think how enormous AND miraculous that is…and we never even think about it as we devour that fat, juicy sandwich. The sad fact is, we take the miracle of our bodies completely for granted!

Muscles continuously change their tasks – back and forth, depending on the movement being done. Think of some guys lifting something by a big rope from one place to another, say cargo from the dock to the ship. One big guy is the head rope- puller, and he has a bunch of helpers behind him on the rope. On the dock another guy is slowing the pull down, and he has a bunch of helpers. It is the timing coordination, cooperation and precision that pulls that off without a mishap. If one guy on the pulling end doesn’t do his job, the cargo is likely to swing the wrong direction. If a guy on the dock doesn’t do his best, the cargo will move to fast…and watch out!

That is the way our body moves effortlessly and efficiently in everyday activities, like taking a shower, getting dressed, eating breakfast, picking up the dishes, etc. Physical activity in and around our homes is important, and a useful way to maintain a basic amount of physical ability and mobility, but when fighting against ravishes of the normal aging process that will occur without significant intervention, it may not be enough. Older adults that live in an assisted living situation, or even in a condominium that has most outdoor chores done for them, may not have the need to be really active around their home…so they’re not.

Any adult not living with stairs as part of their daily experience may eventually lose the leg strength and cardio-vascular fitness that stairs can maintain.

Our grandmothers beat the carpets to get them clean. They did heavy loads of laundry by hand, and kneaded many loaves of bread while our grandfathers were cutting the wood, stacking bales of hay, mucking out stalls and driving a plow behind a mule. Just saddling up a horse to ride takes significant upper body strength.

They died of tuberculosis, pneumonia, and influenza, diphtheria and smallpox, childbirth and even heart attacks. Only about 8% of the population died of a heart attack, and even less died of stroke. Cancer was not even listed (or known) as a predominant killer. They were farmers and miners and housekeepers, fishermen, lumberjacks, nurses…they did physical labor to live.

Granted there were exceptions, the wealthy and city dwellers that relied on the labor of others. But even then walking was the mode of transportation, or climbing in and out of a buggy or carriage. Most houses in the Victorian era were two and three story. That’s lots of stairs. If you weren’t wealthy enough to live in a Victorian house, you can bet your boots you were doing physical labor for a living.

Look at the pictures of your great-grandparents, particularly if you come from pioneer stock. Most of the women were strong and healthy looking, and if you’ve ever seen the frocks from those days, they had incredibly tiny waists! They also had good posture, so did the men.

I can’t remember seeing many pictures of 18th and 19th century men or women who looked frail and bent over with osteoporosis. These days it’s a common sight. Just remember, those sizeable butts were mostly bustle!

Death statistics for the 1990’s list heart disease as the biggest killer of all, with cancer following a close second, and stroke third. These frightening numbers have something to tell us. Our diets and our lifestyles are killing us! Our highly mechanized society has removed the need for most physical activities that were once a necessary part of daily life, for both men and women. We don’t make cakes by hand any more. Even if we make them “from scratch”, the chances are we use a mixer. We have bread machines and cookie dough in a tube. Technology has produced the lightest weight vacuums and shovels. Plastic garbage decorative trash cans instead of metal, or trash compacters! (How’s that for eliminating work?) We have finishes on silver and brass that no longer need polishing; automated car washes, blowers that move leaves around so you don’t have to rake – potatoes that are already peeled and diced. For heavens sake, where will it stop?

Sooo…you probably get my point. We have to find ways to be physically active these days. There are many other ways to start to add movement into your life. If you live in an area where it is safe to walk, on the neighborhood streets, the park, the school or a country road – then, assuming you like to be outdoors AND the weather is decent, walking is a great exercise. A newspaper headline a few years ago, reported a court decision over the Right to Life issue. A woman with advanced Motor-Neuron disease and totally unable to move on her own, had requested her husband be allowed to assist her with her suicide. Someone once said, “When you lose your ability to move – you lose your life.”

The Importance of Trash Cans for Restaurants

There are many things in life that we take for granted that we probably shouldn’t. Among these are definitely trash cas and particularly restaurant trash cans and other commercial trash receptacles that become even more important.

Trash trash cans though we don’t necessarily realise it are important tools for preventing the spread of disease and attracting vermin. Around the home when we eat our food there will inevitably be leftovers – whether it’s food that wasn’t finished, or ingredients or leftovers used in cooking the meals in the first place such as peel or left over ingredients. Food however of course can’t be left out, as doing so would cause it to mould and to generally deteriorate which would create bad smells and attract bacteria that can find it a good home to live in. At the same time the smells and the bacteria themselves can attract things like rats, ants and cockroaches – and once they start to settle in your home this can be very difficult to remove.

For businesses such as restaurants of course though these problems are exacerbated – first of all by the sheer quantity of food and leftovers that need to be dealt with. If you run a restaurant then you will likely deal with industrial quantities of meat, fruits, vegetables and other foods that will easily mould and present a health risk if left within the premises. At the same time gone-off food can cause your other food to more quickly go mouldy and generally make your restaurant far less hygienic than it could be.

The smell and the look of this rotting food would be very off putting and would likely be enough to damage your business as guests opt not to eat there again and generally are put off of your business. At the same time though, the real problems are more severe as rotting food will damage your health and safety. Not only is this an issue from a moralistic point of view (you have a moral imperative not to cause your customers any discomfort or illness), but also from a legal and business sense. Health and safety checks are a regular part of running a business, and if you don’t have good restaurant decorative trash cans you can fail these checks. Worse – if your exposed food should attract vermin such as rats then your restaurant might be closed down until the rats can be removed. This is, as mentioned, something that will take a large amount of time and during that time you will lose all bookings while still paying for rent and bills – simply then this is something you just can’t afford making restaurant decorative trash cans a real investment.

Other businesses also require commercial trash cans for a range of other purposes. These include trash cans for companies that deal with potentially hazardous materials and even those that simply find themselves disposing of electrical devices. Again, having commercial decorative trash cans will in these cases help protect the environment, clients and customers, and also the business’ own interests.
